Why cant PC games run on Linux or a Mac?

Yeah. I was just wondering Do games companies make games specifically for Windows OS? Would it be possible for Linux or Mac borrow / use some of the technology from Microsoft to integrate into their OS. Why isn’t this technology available to other companies if it has such a negative and dominating the gaming market ? Thanks, all view are very much so welcomed
For Why cant PC games run on Linux or a Mac? try this:
  • Its the type of coding, Each uses a different type of code so they don't work with one another. That the same reason viruses attack only windows and not other os's mainly.

It wouldn't matter to the companies to make games for the rest of the 4 - 5% using other OS's. Even hardware manufactures are specific for the O.S, because drivers aren't avilable in other os's.
An for them to recode the entire game to the new code would be a huge waste of money for them.

Basically you have tons of reasons, but certain companies do. Warcraft 3 is for Mac and PC.
An Doom recently was ported to linux
  • Most of the PC games r made for window OS like xp,vista....
this is b'coz of majority of usage....Further linux is very simple to use...& not compitable for most of 3D games....
  • Linux has a lot of the tech available. The two main problems are:
    1) devs like to use Microsoft's DirectX
    2) Both Nvidia and ATI refuse to make fully functional drivers in linux. They may for mac, but I'm not sure.

In reality it's not as bad as all that, though, and it's getting better. The open-source ATI and nvidia drivers can do most basic functions for their cards, and open-source graphics libraries have gotten so good that devs don't need directX to make good games. In fact, the ps3 is leaving directX in the dirt.

A lot of very good games have been ported to linux. Quake 3 and 4 have been linux-ported for a long time. And within the last 2 or 3 years, commercial developers have actually been SELLING linux titles, something practically unheard of till now.

here is THE place to browse the BEST linux games, as well as porting utilities. There are very good, 3-d accerated games there, and ports for such new games as Medal of Honor Allied Assault. Most are free, and the commercial titles are listed too.

Check it out. A lot of people use linux, including the best hacker/gamers, and companies are starting to notice how a lot of us don't like Microsoft. The Windows monopoly has been eroded away significantly, directX no longer dominates graphics libraries. The main thing now is to get better drivers for ATI and Nvidia hardware, either open-source or to pressure them to develop them.

If you have an x86 processor, you can emulate windows with Wine. If you google "wine windows emulator" you'll find the Wine repo. There are a lot of people who successfully play World of Warcraft in linux, and detailed how-to's, though you'll need a fast PC. Since it's emulation, it's not ideal, that's why you need a powerful pc. x86 means an intel cpu.

-edit--> the port of Doom is ancient history, many years ago. check the link. Try legends, or Wolfenstein: ET.
